Donald Trump’s re-election as US President has emboldened the far right, leading to more attacks on the rights of women and trans people. There are now abortion bans in over half of US states, some of them near total bans, following the overturning of Roe v Wade in 2022 as a result of Trump stacking the US Supreme Court.

From the #MeToo movement to rape and sexual assault in parliament and the surge in violence against women, sexism remains entrenched in women’s daily lives. But resistance is also on the rise.

Recent years have seen abortion effectively decriminalised across Australia. Yet this has not solved the problems of access and availability for those who are most in need of public reproductive health services.

We face an ongoing fight for ‘a woman’s right to choose’ in the face of underfunded services and efforts from the right to push back against the gains we have won.
